Katherine Ryan, often hailed as “The Diva,” has been responsible for some of the most hearty laughs in her adopted country of Great Britain for years. This September, she will present her brand new live show Battleaxe in Prague for the first time. The Canadian actress, presenter, and comedian recently toured with her acclaimed Missus program, which was awarded the highest rating and described as “razor-sharp” by The Guardian.
The Telegraph called her style of stand-up comedy “the kind that punches you in the face countless times until you’re aching with laughter.” This suggests that her exclusive show at Prague’s RockOpera will likely require a few sessions of laughter muscle training. Titles like Parental Guidance, Out of Order, and other recent TV hits in England hint at the barrage of punchlines in store.
Although the Ontario-born comedian originally studied something entirely different (urban planning!), the British humor she encountered after moving to the UK in 2008 was simply too infectious to resist. (Nonsense: a talent like hers must be innate, of course.) She won her first comedy competitions in that same decade and gradually turned the entire TV landscape on its head from 2011 onwards, appearing on shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Would I Lie to You?. Alongside her panel show experiences, Ryan also appeared in sitcoms (Episodes) and, as a host for BBC Two, infused her presentations with fresh jokes.
A regular on Netflix for years (In Trouble, Glitter Room), she also took on the lead role in the mini-series The Duchess, which she developed herself. While filming the comedy series Romantic Getaway (with Romesh Ranganathan) for Sky last year, she also created a six-part series for Prime Video, Backstage with Katherine Ryan.
