Prague is gradually canceling flood protection measures this week

The Flood Commission of the City of Prague held a meeting on Monday at 13:30 to assess the current flood situation. Due to the positive developments, the gradual cancellation of all flood protection measures in the city will begin this week.

Today, Tuesday, the gates at Čertovka will be opened, and the last barriers on Zbraslav and Divadelní streets will be removed. Starting Wednesday, the dams in the Prague 1, 2, and 5 districts will also be opened to the public. Navigation on the Vltava River is expected to resume, depending on the current water level.

Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda praised the efficient work of the experts and all the forces involved in preventing serious damage to Prague. “There is no sign of the situation worsening. I would like to thank the citizens of Prague for their discipline and solidarity,” said Svoboda.

Deputy Mayor Jana Komrsková highlighted the progress made since 2002 and the effectiveness of investments in preventive measures. Navigation on the Vltava is set to restart on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, having previously been restricted to between the Barrandov and Jirásek bridges.

The situation in Prague is expected to be largely back to normal by the end of the week, except for the road in the Břežany Valley, which will remain closed until a structural engineer’s report on its possible reopening is available.
