Prague Expands MetroFarm Community Garden: More Space for Schools and Families

The garden is not only a place to grow vegetables and care for animals but also a platform for community learning and exchange about organic farming

Prague is taking another step toward sustainable urban development by making additional land available to the MetroFarm community garden. With the planned expansion of 3,788 square meters, the garden will not only promote local food production but also serve as an educational platform for sustainable agriculture.

The City of Prague has decided to provide additional land to the MetroFarm Community Garden (Komunitní zahrada MetroFarm). The community garden, which has been operating on an area of 9,260 m² since 2020, is set to expand by a further plot of 3,788 m². The association managing the garden not only offers the public access to private plots but also keeps chickens, goats, and bees. The site serves as a focal point for sustainable agriculture and is a popular meeting place for gardeners.

Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Climate Plan, commented favorably on the development of the project: “The activities of the MetroFarm collective not only promote local food production but also provide valuable educational opportunities. In addition to events such as harvest festivals and holiday camps, there is a large field where seasonal vegetables are grown that can be purchased by subscription. This initiative directly supports our climate goals, and I welcome its further expansion.”

The organization applied to expand the garden in June to increase activities for families, schools, and special interest groups. Future visitors will be more involved in vegetable growing and animal care to gain practical experience and scientific knowledge.

Every year, the City of Prague awards grants to support environmental projects, including funding for community gardens, which are considered part of Prague’s climate plan. Applications for the year 2025 can be submitted until mid-January.

The promotion of sustainable agriculture and the establishment of community gardens are key components of the city’s climate plan. The city administration has developed a methodology for establishing such gardens, which is publicly available on the Prague City Hall website.
