200 Gritters, 44,000 Tonnes of Salt, and 830 Maintenance Workers: ŘSD Prepares for Winter

The Roads and Motorways Directorate ensures the accessibility of approximately 1,100 kilometres of motorways and major roads in the Czech Republic

With a fleet of 200 gritters, 44,000 tonnes of road salt, and 830 maintenance workers, the ŘSD is ready to tackle snow and ice. Winter maintenance operations are already underway in higher-altitude regions, including the Ore Mountains, the Giant Mountains, and the Jeseníky Mountains, where snowfall has already begun.

Snow is also expected in the coming days on elevated motorway sections, with the D1 motorway in the Vysočina region being a key focus for winter maintenance teams.

Maintenance of motorways and major roads is managed by regional motorway administration and maintenance centres (SSÚD). Each centre is responsible for approximately 50 kilometres of motorway. For the winter season, 677 drivers, 153 dispatchers, and 196 gritters are on standby.

Additional personnel and equipment from contracted companies are tasked with maintaining first-class roads. In total, 44,005 tonnes of salt, 2,715,000 litres of brine, and 1,516,000 litres of calcium chloride are available. The latter is used in extremely low temperatures when salt and brine become less effective.

On average, the ŘSD consumes around 40,000 tonnes of salt and approximately 10 million litres of brine per winter season. During the 2023/2024 winter, the cost of motorway maintenance reached approximately 150 million CZK.

This winter, the current positions of maintenance vehicles can once again be tracked online via the Aktuální pozice vozidel údržby website at udrzba.rsd.cz. Information on road conditions is also available on the National Traffic Information Centre’s website at dopravniinfo.cz.

The interactive map displays roads and vehicle locations, with route colours indicating the time elapsed since the last treatment. Clicking on a vehicle icon provides details of its journey, including direction and maintenance activities. Roads not marked with colours have not been treated in the past six hours.

Priority is given to ensuring the accessibility of motorways and first-class roads. In winter conditions, the maximum response time from detecting an issue to deploying the first teams is 30 minutes.
