Since Sunday, 24 November 2024, motorists have been able to drive across the Barrandov Bridge in Prague without restrictions, following nearly two years of renovation work and the associated traffic disruptions. The bridge has been fully reopened in both directions.
Motorists have been able to use the Barrandov Bridge without restrictions since yesterday. The final load tests were carried out over the weekend, confirming that the bridge is now ready for use. “We’ve done it! We are handing back the completely renovated Barrandov Bridge to motorists a year ahead of schedule. The bridge is now as good as new, and the 150,000 or so motorists who drive across it every day will benefit from it for decades to come. I would like to thank everyone involved in the reconstruction for their hard work, and also thank the motorists for their patience and understanding during the necessary closures,” said Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor of Prague.
“In every major city, traffic is one of the most important priorities. In Prague, we face many challenges that need addressing. One of them was, and still is, the reconstruction of the Barrandov Bridge. I am firmly convinced that traffic will now flow smoothly once again, and the comfort of motorists will improve,” said Bohuslav Svoboda, Mayor of Prague.
The Barrandov Bridge is the busiest transport link in Prague. Renovation work took place in several stages, starting in May 2022. Originally, the work was scheduled to continue into next year, but the city administration decided to combine the final stages to complete the project this year.
Construction Phases of the Barrandov Bridge Renovation:
- Pier Renovation (Autumn 2020–2021)
- Phase I (16 May 2022–October 2022)
- Phase II (15 May 2023–August 2024): Work on the southern part of the bridge, including the approach from Barrandova Street.
- Phases III and IV (Combined in 2024, 11 March–24 November): Work on the northern part of the bridge.
The Barrandov Bridge, built in the 1980s, had been suffering from several age-related issues, including leaks in the concrete structures, corrosion, and deteriorating waterproofing. The renovation was essential to ensure the safety and long-term functionality of the bridge.
