Prague’s public transport company marks the start of Advent: festively adorned trams, buses, and for the first time, a metro station, create a pre-Christmas atmosphere. From special St. Nicholas rides to the Peace Light, the company offers a festive programme for the whole family.
On the eve of Advent, Saturday, November 30th, Prague’s public transport company launches the Christmas season with a vibrant parade of festively decorated trams and buses. The Christmas fleet will be in the streets of the city until Epiphany, Monday, January 6th, 2025.
The festive illumination of the vehicles will take place at 4:30 pm at the Královka tram loop (between the Malovanka and Marjánka stops), with the parade setting off towards the city centre at around 4:45 pm.
For the first time this year, a metro station will also be decorated for Christmas: the entrance to the Křižíkova station. This station was chosen because it is named after František Křižík, a Czech technician, inventor, industrialist, and pioneer of electric tram transport in Prague. Additionally, the building of the DPP tram museum in the Střešovice depot will be festively decorated. Due to planned renovations, however, both the vehicles and the upper station of the Petřín funicular will remain without Christmas decorations this year.
On Sunday, December 1st, parents and children can visit the St. Nicholas Afternoon at the tram museum in Střešovice between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm. St. Nicholas and his companions will distribute gifts to well-behaved and naughty children amidst the historical exhibits. On this day, the transport company will also offer rides on a festive, historically decorated Ečs-type metro train. Between 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm, it will operate on Line A between the Želivského and Dejvická stations, accompanied by St. Nicholas, an angel, and a devil. More information is available at dpp.cz/mikulas.
On Thursday, December 19th, concerts will be held at selected metro stations, organised in collaboration with the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and the Higher Vocational School. Details can be found at dpp.cz/hudba.
On Saturday, December 21st, 2024, a historic tram carrying the Peace Light (Betlémské světlo) will travel through Prague. This symbol of friendship, peace, and goodwill has been brought to Prague for years by scouts from the Czech Scout Movement.
The tram museum (Muzeum MHD) will be open during Advent every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The museum will be closed on December 25th. In 2025, it will open its doors for the first time on New Year’s Day from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
