Google Trends 2024: What Czechs Searched for the Most

Ice Hockey World Championship, David Pastrňák, and Robert Fico among the Top Search Queries of the Year

The Ice Hockey World Championship, the triumph of David Pastrňák, Robert Fico, and the farewell to actress Simona Postlerová – these are just a few of the topics Czechs searched for the most on Google this year. Google once again presents its annual ranking of events and phenomena that reflect the mood and interests of the public.

The year 2024 was marked by sports and emotions in Google searches. Unsurprisingly, the most searched topic of the year was the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship, which took place in the Czech Republic. David Pastrňák became an internet sensation, and Robert Fico was one of the most searched international personalities after he was targeted in an assassination attempt. Among TV series, Smysl pro tumor attracted the most attention.

This year’s ranking of sports personalities was predictably dominated by hockey players. The most searched sports icon of 2024 was David Pastrňák, whose key role in the historic victory of the Czech ice hockey national team at the 2024 World Championship captivated not only fans but also the wider public. In second place was his teammate Radko Gudas, who made a name for himself not only through his hard-hitting checks on the ice.

Foreign personalities also piqued the interest of Czechs. Robert Fico was the most searched, after he became the target of an assassination attempt in 2024. In second place was Donald Trump, who also survived an assassination attempt and participated in the US presidential elections, where he eventually emerged victorious.

Sadly, 2024 was also marked by farewells. The Czech cultural scene bid farewell to acting legend Karel Heřmánek. Fans of TV series mourned the death of actress Simona Postlerová, who was best known for her roles in the series Četnické humoresky and Ordinace v růžové zahradě.

Once again this year, Google helped Czechs find answers to their questions. The massive outage of Facebook and Instagram sparked a wave of queries such as “Why isn’t Facebook working?”. The curiosity of Czechs was also directed towards history, as they sought to find out why Plzeň has a camel in its coat of arms. Social events were accompanied by questions about why farmers were protesting against excessive bureaucracy and the EU’s climate regulations.

“What interested the world the most?” Like in the Czech Republic, major sporting events such as the Copa América and the European Championship dominated. US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris also attracted significant attention. The most searched deceased personality was the recently departed former singer of the boy band One Direction, Liam Payne.
