Tram Returns to Pankrác: Alternative During Metro Station Closure Next Year

The line has been extended from the intersection of Na Pankráci and Hvězdova streets directly to the Arkády Pankrác shopping centre

The extension of the tram line to Pankrác metro station has been completed, and Line 1 trams have been running on this section since yesterday. Starting 6 January 2025, when Pankrác metro station (Line C) closes for about a year and trains will not stop there, tram line 19 will serve as a replacement in the area. During the station’s closure, transfer connections between lines C and D will be established, and the existing station will undergo extensive renovations.

Until now, the tram line ended at a temporary stop at the intersection of Na Pankráci and Hvězdova streets. This year, Prague’s public transport company extended the line by 260 metres directly to the Arkády Pankrác shopping centre and the underground station of the same name. A new barrier-free terminus was built, equipped with modern shelters in the uniform style of the capital.

Most of the construction work for the extension involved the relocation of utilities. During the construction phase, it was necessary to install a temporary hot water pipe to ensure the heat supply in the area and to lay entirely new pipes.

Another phase of the construction involved the excavation of a subway under Na Pankráci Street. This connects the existing vestibule of Pankrác C station with the Gemini office building, where the new vestibule of Pankrác D station will be built in the future, including an exit to street level.

Once the excavation work was completed, the supporting structures were concreted. Based on this, the construction of the tram line was completed. The transport company also renewed the road surface at this point and planted trees along the route. The shell of the subway is currently around 60% complete—specifically the section between the vestibule of Pankrác C station and the tram stops. This section will be completed in the course of next year and put into operation at the same time as the reopening of the modernised underground station. The remaining part of the subway by the Gemini building will be built in 2026, in parallel with the completion of the vestibule of Pankrác D station.

Pankrác C station will be closed for one year from Monday, 6 January 2025. No trains will stop there during this time. The station will be completely rebuilt during this period.

From 6 January 2025, Prague Transport will deploy additional vehicles on the Pankrác-Pražského povstání-Náměstí Bratří Synků line. Passengers are advised to use the neighbouring metro station Pražského povstání during the closure and take tram line 19 to Pankrác from there.
