    With the festive season just around the corner, we’ve put together the most important information about supermarket opening hours and the operation of Prague’s public transport system. Here’s your handy guide for grocery shopping and planning your journey home on New Year’s Eve.

    In the Czech Republic, shops with an area of over 200 square metres must remain closed on certain public holidays, including 25 and 26 December and New Year’s Day. Pharmacies, petrol stations, and shops at airports and train stations are exempt.

    Supermarket Opening Hours on 24 December 2024:

    • Lidl: Open until 11:30 a.m.
    • Globus: Open until 11:45 a.m.
    • Billa: Open until 11:45 a.m. (delivery service until 3:00 p.m.)
    • Albert: Open until 11:45 a.m.
    • Kaufland: Open until 11:45 a.m.
    • Tesco: Open until 11:45 a.m.
    • Penny-Markt: Closed

    Supermarkets will also be open on Tuesday, 31 December. However, the opening hours on New Year’s Eve will differ from those of a regular shopping day.

    Supermarket Opening Hours on New Year’s Eve 2024:

    • Lidl: Open until 5:00 p.m.
    • Billa: Open until 5:00 p.m.
    • Penny-Markt: Open until 5:00 p.m.
    • Tesco: Open until 6:00 p.m.
    • Albert: Open until 6:00 p.m.
    • Kaufland: Open until 6:00 p.m.
    • Globus: Open until 6:00 p.m.

    The Rohlík and Košík food delivery services will also be in operation on 26 December, 31 December, and 1 January to deliver orders.

    Public Transport in Prague During the Public Holidays

    Prague’s public transport operators have published their timetable for the festive season. On 24 December, buses and trams will run according to the Saturday timetable until 6:00 p.m., after which they will switch to night-time operation. The underground runs until midnight with a 20-minute interval after 6:00 p.m.

    On public holidays, the Prague Transport Association lines will run according to the Sunday timetable. Between 27 and 30 December, the usual weekday timetable applies.

    On New Year’s Eve, the metro will run every 10 minutes until around 2:30 a.m. (1 January 2024). Trams will offer an increased night service from 10:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., followed by a 20-minute service until 7:00 a.m.
