The End of Another Illegal Street Garden in the Centre of Prague

At the end of September, Prague 1 removed unauthorised street gardens from Old Town Square

Prague 1 has dismantled another illegal outdoor terrace, this time in Týnská Alley. The structure had been occupying public land illegally for over a year. Its removal was carried out in accordance with current legal regulations.

The entire process was carefully coordinated and conducted in compliance with legal requirements. The restaurant’s lease for the outdoor terrace expired at the end of October 2023. Since then, the structure had remained illegally on public land. Moreover, the operator lacked the necessary permit for the special use of public space – a so-called occupation permit. Additionally, the street garden had been built as a permanent, roofed structure, which did not comply with the guidelines outlined in the “Manual for a Cultivated Prague” (Manuál pro kultivovanou Prahu).

The city administration is intensively addressing the problem of illegal street gardens in the city centre. This initiative is based on the findings of a survey on the use of public spaces conducted last year, spearheaded by the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Giancarlo Lamberti.

“Public spaces are subject to clear rules that must be adhered to. In the historical centre of Prague, it is especially important to ensure that entrepreneurs wishing to use public spaces possess all the necessary permits – including a lease agreement, an occupation permit, and paid fees. The illegal use of public spaces cannot be tolerated, not only to uphold the rules but also to ensure fairness for those entrepreneurs who comply with them,” commented Giancarlo Lamberti, Chairman of the Finance Committee, who initiated the process of removing the illegal street garden.

At the end of September, Prague 1 had already removed unauthorised street gardens from Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí). By late November, the City of Prague also eliminated the last illegal Trdelník stall in Na Příkopě Street. Prague 1 continues to work on measures to improve the order and quality of public spaces, with current efforts focused on removing additional unauthorised stalls in the city centre.
