The sustainable use of Christmas trees is a tradition at Prague Zoo. After Christmas, traders donate their unsold conifers to the zoo, where they are used as food or turned into scratching posts and toys for the animals.
Tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday, Prague Zoo will present its animals with a traditional Christmas gift. More than ten species will be spoiled with special feedings. For elephants, bison, and porcupines, the unsold conifers are not only a delicacy but also a real treat. Curious kea parrots (Nestor notabilis) explore the trees, while the young animals of the Dja Reserve let off steam.
The carnivores don’t miss out either: Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) are lured with quails hidden among the branches, and honey badgers (Mellivora capensis) find trees decorated with meatballs and willow rods. The polar bear twins, Gregor and Aleut, will experience their first Christmas tree surprise at Prague Zoo, with apples and calamari as special treats.
Such measures, including unusual toys or special food, encourage the animals to play, explore, and discover. This is important for their mental and physical activity and contributes to their well-being.
