Czech Press Photo 2024: Award-Winning Images on Display at the National Museum

New exhibition at the National Museum presents the award-winning images and other selected photographs

The winners of this year’s Czech Press Photo 2024 competition have been announced, and a new exhibition at the National Museum showcases the award-winning images alongside other selected photographs. In total, more than 500 printed photographs and over 250 images on screens and projections by 80 photographers will be on display. The Photo of the Year 2024 depicts a moment from the Olympic Games in Paris, captured by Peter David Josek.

The international jury selected the Photo of the Year from a series of images taken by Petr David Josek at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris. The 30th anniversary edition of the Czech Press Photo contest attracted 256 participants from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with over 4,500 entries.

“Sports photography rarely wins Photo of the Year, but this image clearly stands out due to its exceptional quality. It was taken from a unique angle, is completely original, and technically excellent. It was this photo that reminded the jury of the original spirit of the Games: excellence, respect, and friendship—the pursuit of continuous progress, the preservation of human dignity, harmonious development, and the promotion of endeavour. The Olympic Games are also a symbol of hard work and courage. Great results cannot be achieved without effort. Overcoming obstacles is more than just a symbol,” commented the chairman of the jury, Petr Mlch, on the selection of the Photo of the Year.

The winner of the city’s grant, a one-year creative scholarship, was personally chosen by the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda. He honoured the set In Casual Way by Petr Topič.

“Prague is a city with a thousand faces, and therefore it also has a thousand views. I am pleased that some of them have been captured for posterity so that we can remember them. The Czech capital never gets old,” commented Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda on the selection of the winner.

The exhibition of the winning and other selected photos from the Czech Press Photo 2024 competition is organised in cooperation with the National Museum in the New Building and will run until 23 April 2025.
