The finalists for the 32nd Czech Lion have been revealed! The Czech Film and Television Academy has announced the nominees for the country’s most prestigious film award. The award ceremony will take place on 8 March 2025 at the Rudolfinum in Prague, honoring the best films and achievements of the year.
The Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) unveiled the nominations for the 32nd annual Czech Lion (Český lev) awards on Monday. In the first round of voting, Academy members evaluated 93 films, TV series, and mini-series that premiered in 2024. A total of 29 titles will compete in the final round across 24 categories for the coveted “Czech Oscar,” the Czech Lion. Vlny (Waves), Amerikánka (The American Girl), Murder, and the mini-series Metoda Markovič: Hojer received the most nominations.
Voting for all categories in the 32nd Český lev took place between 1 December 2024 and 5 January 2025, with 228 jurors from the ČFTA Academy casting their votes.
Jiří Mádl’s historical drama Vlny, which revisits the events of 1968 when Czechoslovakia was occupied by Warsaw Pact troops as part of the “fraternal aid” programme, leads the pack with 14 nominations. The film is also in contention for a prestigious award at the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for 2 March 2025, with nominations to be announced on 17 January 2025.
Following closely is Viktor Taus’ stylized film Amerikánka (The American Girl), inspired by the true story of a girl institutionalized during the normalization period who longs for freedom, with 13 nominations. The mini-series Metoda Markovič: Hojer (Hojer), directed by Pavel Soukup for the streaming platform Voyo, received 10 nominations. This series offers an unvarnished portrayal of police work in former Czechoslovakia.
Two Czech Lions were already awarded during the ČFTA press conference on Monday. The audience award went to Vlny, which achieved an above-average rating of 88% on the ČSFD portal. The award was accepted by actor Vojtěch Vodochodský, who is also nominated in the “Best Leading Actor” category. “The whole Vlny team is thrilled about this award. Audience recognition means the most to us,” said Vodochodský.
The Český lev awards will be presented on 8 March at the Rudolfinum in Prague and broadcast live on Czech Television’s ČT1 channel. The ceremony will be hosted by presenter and YouTuber Karel “Kovy” Kovář.
