Prague 1 Takes Further Action Against Illegal Stalls

Similar measures were recently taken in the Old Town Square, Týn Street and Na Příkopě

Prague 1 is continuing its efforts to ensure order and the lawful use of public space. On the initiative of the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Giancarlo Lamberti, a process has been launched to remove several illegal stalls that detract from the appearance and functionality of public spaces in the city center.

“At the end of last year, I discovered an unauthorized stall selling bus tickets in front of the Czech National Bank building. This stall was being used by so-called ‘umbrella vendors’—individuals pretending to represent a charity organization to circumvent the ban on street vending,” explained Giancarlo Lamberti. Following his tip-off and in cooperation with the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská, the legal status of the stall was investigated. The result was clear: the stall had neither a rental contract nor a license to use the public space and was therefore operating illegally.

“Although we did not manage to identify the specific operator in this case, the law allows for the resolution of such issues, and we have taken the necessary steps to remove this stall,” added Lamberti.

Recently, Janek Rubes, better known as the Honest Guide Prague, highlighted this stall in a video, drawing attention to the problem of umbrella vendors selling hop-on hop-off tickets to tourists.

Similar measures were recently taken on Old Town Square, Týn Street and Na Příkopě. In addition to the stall in front of the Czech National Bank, work is currently underway to remove another unauthorized stall—a kebab stand on Národní Street.

“The aim of these measures is to ensure that public space in our district is used legally and fairly. We believe that the consistent steps we are taking will contribute to a higher standard of urban sophistication,” added Giancarlo Lamberti.

The Municipality of Prague 1 plans to continue actively monitoring the legal use of public space to ensure it serves the best interests of both residents and visitors.
