Prague – The Czech Republic’s Top Tourist Magnet with 8.1 Million Visitors in 2024

Most tourists in 2024 came from neighbouring Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom

Prague remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Around 8.1 million tourists visited the Czech capital in 2024, marking a 9% increase compared to the previous year. Travellers from Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom were particularly drawn to the metropolis on the Vltava River.

In 2024, a total of approximately 8,079,195 tourists visited the Czech capital. According to the latest data from the Czech Statistical Office, this represents a 9% rise compared to 2023. The largest number of foreign visitors came from Germany (1,054,347), the United States (492,748), and the United Kingdom (472,391). The growing trend of travellers from Asian markets also continues. Prague remains the dominant tourist destination within the Czech Republic, accounting for around 30% of all visitors to the country. In total, the Czech Republic recorded around 23 million visitors last year.

‘2024 was a successful year for tourism in Prague. With around 8 million tourist arrivals, the city has returned to pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, we are seeing a significant shift in the type of visitors. The proportion of travellers seeking the highest quality—whether in hotels, restaurants, or exclusive experiences—is increasing,’ says JUDr. Jiří Pospíšil, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism in Prague.

His statement is supported by the results of the STR report (Smith Travel Research), which indicates that the occupancy rate of Prague’s luxury hotels increased by almost 12% compared to 2023.

‘Thanks to our systematic marketing campaigns, we are attracting more upscale visitors to Prague. The average tourist spending in the city is rising, and services are continuously improving,’ explains František Cipro, Director of Prague City Tourism.

The average length of stay for tourists in Prague is 2.3 nights. The average price per hotel room is around CZK 3,000, which is comparable to prices in cities such as Berlin or Vienna.

Most tourists in 2024 came from neighbouring Germany (1,054,347), the United States (492,748), and the United Kingdom (472,391). Visitors from Slovakia (379,150), Italy (369,301), and Poland (349,616) also accounted for a significant share, representing a fifth of all guests (1,573,114 in total).

The largest increase last year was in the number of tourists from Asia, which rose by 28% compared to the previous year (880,802 in total). The highest number of Asian visitors came from South Korea (170,709, +10%). The number of Japanese tourists also grew to 53,295 (+29%). Overall, visitors from Asian countries accounted for 11% of Prague’s total tourist numbers in 2024. Among European countries, Switzerland (+29%), Spain (+21%), and the United Kingdom (+18%) recorded the highest year-on-year growth.

Prague attracted visitors with its historical monuments, high-quality services, and world-class sporting and cultural events, including the Ice Hockey World Championship in May and concerts by international stars such as Rammstein and US hip-hop superstar Travis Scott. Compared to other Czech regions, Prague also ranked first in terms of domestic tourism, followed by South Moravia and South Bohemia.

‘Given Prague’s popularity, we are aware of the risk of overcrowding at historical landmarks. We regularly monitor the situation in the city and share our expertise with partner destinations. We also offer sustainable options for exploring the metropolis. One example is the Prague Visitor Pass, which encourages visitors to discover lesser-known districts beyond the historic centre. Last year, 40,000 passes were sold—more than ever before,’ concluded Cipro.
