Czech Republic in the grip of a cold spell: frost until Thursday, then milder weather

In some areas of the Jizera and Ore Mountains, temperatures dropped as low as -25°C during the night

It was freezing cold in the Czech Republic this morning. According to a report from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the low temperatures are expected to last until Thursday, particularly in the northern half of the country. The thermometer already showed temperatures below minus fifteen degrees in several places on Sunday night.

A cold weather warning has been in effect for much of northern Czech Republic since the weekend and will continue until Thursday morning. “From Tuesday night, the cold front will extend to the north of the Plzeň region and a large part of the Vysočina region. The frost will gradually ease in the second half of the week,” said the meteorologists.

Around 6 o’clock this morning, temperatures were mostly between -7°C and -12°C, though in many places, the temperature dropped below -12°C and occasionally even below -15°C, such as in Česká Lípa, Šumperk, Liberec, and Varnsdorf. In some areas of the Jizera and Ore Mountains, temperatures even reached -25°C. It was milder this morning in the Plzeň region and also in South Moravia.

Severe frost is expected to continue at night until Thursday. In the second half of the week, the frost will ease and daytime temperatures will rise well above freezing. The weather will remain sunny, with clouds only increasing temporarily, and there will be no precipitation apart from occasional scattered snow showers at the beginning of the week.
