Poll: Majority of Czechs Reject Further Support for Ukraine with Arms Deliveries

Humanitarian aid and diplomatic solutions continue to enjoy broad support in the country

Three years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the attitude of the Czech people towards supporting the country has changed. While humanitarian aid and diplomatic solutions continue to receive broad approval, support for arms deliveries is declining. A recent survey reveals how divided opinions are regarding the possible end of the war.

It has now been three years since Russian troops invaded Ukraine. Since then, Czech support for the supply of arms and ammunition to Ukraine has waned. The survey, conducted by Data Collect for Czech Television (ČT), was carried out between 10 and 14 February 2025 – that is, before this year’s Munich Security Conference, the negotiations between the USA and Russia, and US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the survey, 77 per cent of Czechs support humanitarian aid for Ukraine, and 66 per cent favour diplomatic measures at the international level. Around 60 per cent of respondents would be willing to accept a swift ceasefire, even if this meant territorial losses for Ukraine.

After three years of war, support for the supply of weapons and ammunition has fallen significantly. According to the survey, a small majority of Czechs are in favour of restricting these deliveries.

Opinions on the possible end of the war are divided in the Czech Republic. Almost half of those surveyed would welcome a Ukrainian victory and a return to the pre-2014 borders. Conversely, just as many consider a ceasefire with territorial losses for Ukraine to be the best solution.

A majority (61 per cent) favour further tightening sanctions against Russia, and half of Czechs continue to support a generous asylum policy for Ukrainian refugees.

Around 400,000 war refugees are currently living in the Czech Republic, the majority of them in Prague. In addition to the declining willingness to support Ukraine with weapons and ammunition, a survey at the end of last year showed that the general interest of Czechs in the war in Ukraine is also on the decline.
