Ukrainians make up more than half of the foreigners registered in the Czech Republic

Around 1.1 million officially registered foreigners were living in the country at the end of 2024

The Czech Ministry of the Interior has published its latest report on the migration situation in the Czech Republic and migration routes to the European Union.

The number of foreigners living in the Czech Republic on a long-term basis is continuously increasing. By the end of 2024, a total of 1,094,090 foreign nationals were registered in the Czech Republic. Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 28,350 people (+2.7%). The proportion of foreigners in the country’s total population has thus reached 10%.

One of the regions with the highest concentration of foreign nationals is the capital, Prague, where 32.4% of all foreigners registered in the Czech Republic with a stay of more than 90 days live. The Central Bohemian Region follows in second place with a share of 14.2%.

The largest group of foreign nationals continues to be citizens of Ukraine (589,456), followed by nationals of Slovakia (121,472) and Vietnam (69,015). The significant increase in the foreign population is still mainly due to the granting of temporary protection to people who have fled the Russian aggression in Ukraine. In relation to the total population, the Czech Republic continues to host the most Ukrainian refugees within the EU. At the end of 2024, there were around 36 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants, which corresponded to 3.6% of the total population.

Illegal migration through the Czech Republic

In 2024, a total of 420 people were stopped in connection with illegal transit migration. This corresponds to a decrease of 4,322 people (-91.1%) compared to 2023. The largest group was made up of Syrian nationals, who accounted for 69.3% of all detected cases. This was followed by nationals from Turkey, Russia, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Mongolia. The destination of most of the detected migrants was the Federal Republic of Germany, followed by the Netherlands and France. The Czech Republic, therefore, remains primarily a transit country.
