Prague Starts Early with Organic Waste Collection: Seasonal Bins Available from March

The reason for this is the favourable weather conditions, with many people already starting to prepare their gardens for spring

The City of Prague has begun the organic waste collection season a month earlier this year. Seasonal bins have been available again since 1 March 2025 to meet the increased demand for organic waste disposal. This is the city’s response to the mild weather and the early start to gardening.

As of this weekend, seasonal bins for organic waste are once again available in Prague—this year, a month earlier than usual. The capital is responding to the needs of residents who have started work in their gardens earlier due to the favourable weather. This year, the seasonal organic waste bins will be available from March until around mid-December.

The City of Prague, in cooperation with Prague Services (Pražské služby), will commence organic waste collection from seasonal bins this weekend (1 March 2025). The reason for this is the favourable weather conditions, with many people already beginning their spring garden preparations. Collection dates for the 2025 season, covering the entire capital, can be found on the Pražské služby website. Existing customers have also been informed about the start of the season and collection dates via email.

‘The quality of services provided is also measured by their flexibility and speed of response. Due to climate change, we will be able to rely less and less on the calendar in the future, so I am glad that Pražské služby are prepared for this. I personally expect that the amount of biowaste collected will increase again this year,’ says Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor of Prague for Environment and Climate.

Organic waste collection is highly utilised in Prague, with the number of regularly collected organic waste bins rising to around 44,000 since 2020. This service is provided free of charge by the City of Prague, primarily to reduce the volume of mixed waste. Residents can order bins themselves at bio.praha.eu/formular.

Biowaste collection plays a key role in meeting the targets set out in the Waste Act, ensuring the required proportion of separately collected recyclable municipal waste. The sorted biowaste is processed in composting plants and can be used, for example, to produce certified organic fertiliser.
