A Monument Celebrates Its Birthday: 550 Years of the Prague Powder Tower

Prague City Tourism has prepared an extensive year-round programme to mark the anniversary of the Prague Powder Tower

Prague’s Powder Tower, one of the city’s most important landmarks, is celebrating its 550th anniversary this year. To mark this special occasion, Prague City Tourism has organised a diverse programme of guided tours, special events, and insights into the ongoing restoration work. Discover the history and beauty of this iconic monument and experience Prague from a new perspective.

To commemorate the 550th anniversary of the Prague Powder Tower (Prašná brána), Prague City Tourism has prepared an extensive year-round programme. The main celebrations begin in March, marking 550 years since the laying of the foundation stone. In addition to guided tours, visitors can test their knowledge in a themed quiz. Holders of a Lítačka card can visit the tower for a symbolic entrance fee of CZK 55.

‘The 550th anniversary of the Powder Tower is a significant milestone for the city and therefore an ideal opportunity to honour the historical value of this monument with a rich supporting programme. We want Prague’s monuments to be visited by the people of Prague, so we have prepared these celebrations especially for them,’ says Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism Jiří Pospíšil.

From Wednesday, 19 March, to Sunday, 23 March, a special symbolic admission price of CZK 55 applies to all Lítačka cardholders. Additionally, visitors can purchase a special multi-ticket for CZK 220, granting access to the four Prague towers along the so-called Royal Route: the Powder Tower (Prašná brána), the Old Town Bridge Tower (Staroměstská mostecká věž), the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, and the Old Town Hall (Staroměstská radnice).

The Powder Tower’s 550th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year. Festivities begin on 4 March with a special guided tour led by Karel Kučera, curator of the Prague Towers, who will reveal new discoveries made during the recent restoration and share the stories hidden within the monument’s stone walls.

In March and April, visitors will also have a unique opportunity to observe skilled restorers at work on the Powder Tower. For the first time ever, these master craftsmen will demonstrate traditional restoration techniques to the public. Carpenters, stonemasons, and glass painters will showcase their skills in open studios in the courtyard of the Clam-Gallas Palace.

Prague City Tourism has long sought to encourage both residents and visitors to engage more deeply with the city’s heritage. As part of the celebrations, special guided tours will offer participants the chance to explore the historic interiors of the tower and enjoy breathtaking views from the gallery.
