Ester Ledecká made history on Thursday by becoming the first person to win medals at two different FIS World Championships in one season. At the Snowboard World Championships in Engadin, the Czech skier was crowned world champion in the parallel giant slalom. In February, the three-time Olympic champion had already won bronze in the downhill at the Ski World Championships in Saalbach.
At this year’s World Ski Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria), the Czech secured the bronze medal in the women’s downhill. She thus celebrated her first World Championship medal in alpine skiing and became only the second Czech woman, after Šárka Strachová, to reach the podium at an alpine skiing World Championship.
Now, after eight years, Ester Ledecká has once again been crowned winner of the Snowboard World Championships, following her 2017 title in the giant slalom. The three-time Olympic champion is the first athlete to win medals at two different World Championships under the FIS banner in the same season.
In 2018, Ester Ledecká won gold in the Olympic super-G in PyeongChang—starting 26th and, to the surprise of many, finishing just ahead of the favourite at the time, Austria’s Anna Veith.
Today, the exceptional Czech athlete has the chance to go one better: From 13:30, she will compete in another discipline, the alpine parallel slalom, at the Snowboard World Championships in Engadin, Switzerland.
