On Saturday, 29th March 2025, Prague Zoo will open its 94th season with a special programme. Highlights include the official laying of the foundation stone for the upcoming Arctic exhibition and the presentation of the “tree lobster” (Dryococelus australis).
- 10:40 AM – Performance by singer-songwriter Michal Horák
- 11:00 AM – Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Arctic exhibition for polar bears and seals
- 12:50 PM – Performance by the band Laura a její tygři
- 1:00 PM – Introduction of the tree lobsters
New Arctic Exhibition
The foundation stone for the new Arctic exhibition will be symbolically laid near the Gočár Houses at the statue of Sněhulka, the first artificially reared polar bear cub. On a special stone base, an ice cube containing miniature frozen polar bears will gradually melt. Visitors can take these home – the chips hidden inside the figures will later serve as tickets for a future visit to Prague Zoo. The zoo’s director, Miroslav Bobek, along with Prague’s Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda and his deputy for environmental affairs, Jana Komrsková, will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.

The World’s Largest Flightless Insects – The Tree Lobsters
The tree lobster (Dryococelus australis), the largest flightless insect in the world, reaching lengths of up to 15 centimetres, was long thought to be irretrievably extinct. The sensational rediscovery of a few specimens on a remote rock in the South Pacific, known as Ball’s Pyramid, created a global sensation. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn fascinating details about the care of these remarkable insects from expert Vojtěch Víta. The tree lobster exhibition, named after Ball’s Pyramid, is located near the Bororo Reserve and will open after the performance by the band Laura a její tygři.
Additional Programme:
From 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, face painting for children will be available at the Gočár Houses (Gočárovy domky) and the Bororo Reserve (Rezervace Bororo). An Arctic-themed play station will be located by the polar bears, while the tree lobsters will be showcased at the Lord Howe Island programme at the Ballova Pyramida.
On Saturday, the popular guided feedings and animal encounters will return. After the long winter, visitors will be able to witness the feeding of meerkats and ring-tailed lemurs, as well as the popular training sessions of the South African sea lions. The full programme is available in the Prague Zoo mobile app.
