Spring has arrived at the Fata Morgana greenhouse! From mid-April, the new butterfly exhibition will feature tropical and European species that will brighten up the space with their vibrant colours. This year, the theme of seduction takes centre stage.
With spring, hundreds of butterflies will come to life in the Fata Morgana greenhouse at Prague’s Botanical Garden, their colourful wings lighting up the room and offering fascinating insights into the lives of these delicate creatures.
This year, the exhibition focuses on the theme of seduction (Vábení) – how plants attract these delicate pollinators. Unlike bees, which collect pollen mainly in pollen pods on their legs, butterflies transfer pollen passively by using their entire body. This allows them to cover a larger area and pollinate plants in more distant locations.
Butterflies are true masters at pollinating flowers that are difficult to reach. Thanks to their long proboscis, they can also pollinate tubular flowers and orchids with long spurs, making them irreplaceable helpers of nature. They can even cling to very thin flowers, which allows them to pollinate plants that are inaccessible to other pollinators.
The seduction of butterflies primarily occurs during the mating season. Some of the males fly for kilometres in search of females. The masters among them are tropical moths, which can also be seen in all their splendour at the exhibition.
If you are lucky, you may witness the breathtaking moment when a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis and becomes a fully-grown individual. This marvellous process promises to offer an unforgettable experience.
The Botanical Garden in Prague has been working with a butterfly farm in Stratford-upon-Avon (England) for several years. From there, around 5,000 pupae of various butterfly species will gradually arrive at the Fata Morgana greenhouse in Prague.
