Sensational: Jakub Menšík Wins ATP Masters Final in Miami

The last time a Czech player won an ATP Masters final was Tomáš Berdych in Paris in 2005

19-year-old Czech Jakub Menšík has won his first ATP title, defeating 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic 7-6, 7-6 in the final of the Miami ATP Masters. Menšík, who hails from Prostějov, is only the fourth Czech to win an ATP Masters title.

Jakub Menšík has won his first title on the ATP Tour. In the final of the Masters tournament in Miami, he defeated the record-holder with 24 Grand Slam titles, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, 7-6, 7-6. Menšík clinched the Miami final after two hours and three minutes.

Menšík, who comes from Prostějov (a town in the Olomoucký kraj region in northern Moravia), is now only the fourth Czech and the first since 2005 to win an ATP Masters tournament. The last time this achievement was recorded was by Tomáš Berdych in Paris. Menšík thus avenged last year’s quarter-final defeat to former world number one Djokovic in Shanghai, where he lost to his idol in three sets.

‘Thank you for everything you have done for everyone in this sport,’ said Menšík in the direction of his idol Novak Djokovic after his first victory in an ATP Masters final.

Thirty-seven-year-old Djokovic missed the chance to win his 100th ATP title. He could have triumphed in Miami for the seventh time; his last victory in the tournament came nine years ago.
