Easter in the Czech Republic is a celebration filled with traditions and customs that welcome the arrival of spring. From the colourful Easter markets to the wooden rattles and Pomlázka, there is much to discover.
This year, Easter will be celebrated from 18th April to 21st April, and in the Christian tradition, it marks the arrival of spring. The movable holiday falls on the first weekend after the first full moon of spring, which follows the equinox, in March or April. The Easter festivities have deep historical roots, with influences from pagan, Jewish, and Christian traditions.
Many customs have been preserved in the Czech Republic to this day. For example, in some regions, the custom of the rattles is still observed. From Thursday to Saturday, young men walk through villages, making an ear-splitting noise with wooden rattles to call the faithful to mass, as the church bells remain silent during the Easter holidays. According to folk belief, the bells fly to Rome to receive the Pope’s Easter blessing.

On Easter Monday, young men and boys visit homes, symbolically “whipping” girls and women with a stick known as the Pomlázka. This tradition is believed to bring the women beauty and vitality for the year ahead. Another custom that remains popular is the giving of eggs. Eggs, as an ancient symbol of new life and rebirth, are an essential part of the Easter Monday celebrations.
With spring’s arrival, the beloved Easter markets are also back in Prague. These markets promise folk entertainment, demonstrations of traditional crafts and customs, as well as an abundance of delicious food and drinks. Numerous beautifully decorated stalls offer typical Easter goods and gifts, including various types of Easter eggs, ceramics, and blankets with spring motifs.
All in all, Easter in the Czech Republic is a celebration full of traditions and customs, enjoyed by both the faithful and the non-religious alike. It’s an opportunity to experience the rich culture of the country and be inspired by the joy and optimism that accompany the start of spring.
