Easter 2025: Shop Opening Hours on Public Holidays

Opening hours, Easter holidays, and more – what you should know about Easter in the Czech Republic

Easter is just over a week away. Easter Sunday falls on 20 April 2025. As usual, it’s important to check the opening hours of shops, as these are restricted by law in the Czech Republic, as they are on other public holidays.

Easter is the most important Christian holiday, but also a time for folk customs marking the beginning of spring. Each year, it promises a long weekend. This year, Good Friday falls on 18 April, and Easter Monday on 21 April.

    Shop Opening Hours at Easter
While shops remain open as usual on Good Friday, the law governing shop opening hours in the retail sector applies on Easter Monday. This law stipulates that shops with a sales area larger than 200 m² must remain closed on certain public holidays. Larger purchases should therefore be made in advance – but you can still shop online on Easter Monday.

When are the children off school?
The Easter holidays begin on Thursday, 17 April. School will resume on Tuesday, 22 April.

    Watch Out on the Roads
As usual, the police will be out in greater numbers during these days to carry out checks. There will also be more alcohol checks on Czech roads during the public holidays.

How is the Date of Easter Determined?
Easter is a moveable feast. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. If the full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is celebrated the following Sunday. Easter can occur between 22 March and 25 April.

    And Next Year?
Next year, Easter will fall a few weeks earlier: in 2026, Easter will be observed from 3 April (Good Friday) to 6 April (Easter Monday).
