Increase in Fines for Fare Dodgers in the Czech Republic: Up to CZK 2,500 from July 2025

The amendment was passed by the Senate on Wednesday and is now awaiting the President's signature

In the Czech Republic, fare dodgers will face higher fines in the future. A new amendment to the Road Traffic Act, passed by the Senate, raises the maximum fine to CZK 2,500. The amendment could come into effect as early as July 2025 and will apply to both larger cities and public transport in Prague.

Fare dodgers in the Czech Republic will face fines of up to CZK 2,500 under the new amendment. The maximum fine increase was approved by the Senate on Wednesday and is now awaiting the President’s signature. According to Ministry of Transport spokesman František Jemelka, transport companies will be able to implement the new surcharge cap from July.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the new cap could come into effect in July. “We expect the changes to take effect from 1 July 2025. Cities are supportive of the surcharge ceiling adjustment, and the proposal is backed by the Association of Transport Companies of the Czech Republic, which represents all major public transport companies,” a spokesperson told ČT24.

So far, the surcharge for regular transport, including the fine for illegal travel on public transport, has been capped at CZK 1,500.

Large Cities Likely to Increase Fines

The association stated that larger cities, such as Brno, Pilsen, and Ostrava, are likely to take advantage of the option to increase fines. The last time the surcharge limit was adjusted was 12 years ago, while fares have risen considerably during that period. The association had already indicated in June of the previous year which cities might agree to an increase in fines.

Public transport in Prague will also be affected by the increase in the maximum fine, according to a statement released last year. Currently, passengers in the capital pay CZK 1,500 for traveling without a valid ticket, or CZK 1,000 if the fine is paid within fifteen days.
