Moravská Třebová Honoured as Historic Town of the Year 2024

The competition recognises outstanding projects in monument preservation and restoration

Moravská Třebová has been named Historic Town of the Year 2024. The award recognises exemplary care for cultural heritage and the successful restoration of important monuments.

The title Historic Town of the Year 2024 (Historické město roku) highlights the effective use of funding for monument restoration as part of a programme run by the Ministry of Culture. Deputy Mayor Václav Dokoupil accepted the award at a ceremony in Prague on Tuesday.

The competition, organised by the Association of Historical Settlements in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Regional Development, honours outstanding projects in the preservation and restoration of historic sites. The Ministry of Culture’s programme aims to combine state, municipal and private funds for the conservation of historic towns and monuments.

Moravská Třebová, a town of just under 10,000 inhabitants in the Svitavy region, is home to 184 cultural monuments. The gradual restoration of the Renaissance chateau—spanning 28 years and costing CZK 100 million—was completed in 2024. In parallel, the Latin School and the Town Hall were also renovated and opened to the public. A modern information centre was built on the ground floor.

However, the town is not only focused on its past. Last year, it began transforming the industrial site of the former Miltra dairy into a new cultural centre. The project, based on a design by architects Rusina Frei, is being funded through the Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP).

    Further Awards

A prize of CZK 100,000 from the Minister for Regional Development was awarded to Nové Město nad Metují in the Hradec Králové region and to Prague 1 for outstanding implementation of the programme for the regeneration of protected monument areas. A special prize was awarded to Horní Slavkov in the Karlovy Vary region for the restoration of St George’s Church (Kostel svatého Jiří), and to the town of Lipník nad Bečvou in the Olomouc region.
