Cultural monuments have long been one of the main reasons people travel to the Czech Republic. Traditionally, both domestic and international tourists have shown the greatest interest in Prague. However, other regions are increasingly coming into focus, with visitors now more frequently exploring places that were once overlooked.
When it comes to sites of interest, castles and chateaux top the list. Museums and galleries, towers, churches, examples of folk architecture, and sites associated with famous figures also draw considerable attention. Cultural monuments play a significant role in overall holiday spending.
State-owned castles, chateaux and other heritage sites managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) welcomed over four million visitors last year – surpassing the four-million mark for the second consecutive year.
Prague Castle remains particularly popular: 2.6 million people visited in 2024, marking a 17% increase on the previous year. Interest is especially high in sites that have undergone renovations, opened new areas, or introduced innovative tours and experiences.

Among the most visited sites were Lednice Chateau and the Sedlec area in Kutná Hora – each attracting around 306,000 visitors last year. The largest open-air museum in the Czech Republic, the Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, also proved a major draw, with 284,000 visitors. Technical monuments and architectural landmarks are increasingly sought after as well – the Tatra Lorry Museum, for instance, welcomed nearly 94,000 visitors, while Brno’s Villa Tugendhat received around 56,000.
Cultural Sites as a Central Pillar of CzechTourism Campaigns
Cultural monuments also play a key role in the international promotion of the Czech Republic. They feature prominently in nearly all CzechTourism marketing efforts and help raise the profile of lesser-known yet promising destinations beyond the major tourist hubs.
