Construction begins on new TT Muzeum tram line in Prague
The start of construction on the Muzeum tram line forms part of a long-term plan to enhance public transport in the centre of the Czech capital
Construction work on the new tram line TT Muzeum began today in Prague. The line is intended to improve public transport connections to the city centre and will link up directly with the new line at Wenceslas Square.
The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) marked the official launch of construction today. The project continues on from the work at Wenceslas Square, with which the Muzeum line forms an integrated operational unit.
Construction will formally begin on Saturday, 14 June 2025, with the removal of existing tracks along Legerova Street. The works are expected to last approximately 20 months, with completion scheduled for March 2027. During this period, tram services will be suspended in both directions on the I. P. Pavlova – Muzeum route.
‘The commencement of the Muzeum tram line project is part of a long-term strategy to develop public transport in the city centre. The project is technically demanding, will be carried out in close coordination with other construction initiatives, and requires precise cooperation among all parties involved. I am confident that the result will lead to improved transport connectivity in this busy area,’ said Bohuslav Svoboda, Mayor of Prague.
In the third phase, the main road will be restored to its original route with new surfacing, and construction of a new tram line will commence on the section between Vinohradská and Škrétova Streets. The route will be slightly repositioned with a wider track spacing to accommodate a track triangle. The current Muzeum tram stop area next to Legerova Street, as well as the entire Legerova/Vinohradská intersection, will be redesigned.
The new stops, provisionally named Škrétova, will be fully barrier-free and, unlike the current configuration, located opposite one another. The platforms will offer more space, with pedestrian crossings at both ends. The layout will be clearer and better organised for passengers and pedestrians alike.
The appearance of the TT Muzeum and the architectural design of the surrounding public space were defined back in 2017 by the Prague Institute for Planning and Development (IPR) in its concept study Kulturní distrikt (“Cultural District”). The study was approved by the Prague City Council in January 2018.
