Prague Bans E-Scooter Sharing from January 2026
In future, only bicycles and e-bikes will be allowed in sharing schemes
Prague is taking action in response to numerous complaints about e-scooters in the city. From January 2026, shared e-scooters will be banned in the Czech capital.
The city of Prague is responding to ongoing complaints about e-scooters in public spaces: according to Novinky.cz, the operation of shared e-scooters in the Czech capital will be prohibited from January 2026. The city council officially approved the ban on Monday. In future, only bicycles and e-bikes will be permitted within sharing schemes.
E-scooters, frequently left on pavements or ridden recklessly through the Old Town, have repeatedly drawn criticism in recent years. Tourists often used them as a leisure activity rather than a means of transport – much to the annoyance of residents and pedestrians.
The new system will be based on agreements between the Technical Road Administration (TSK) and the providers of bicycles and e-bikes. These vehicles will in future only be allowed to be parked in specially designated zones – so-called “parking islands.” There will be no approved parking spaces for e-scooters. In practice, this marks the end of their commercial operation.
“We are introducing clear rules to free public spaces from uncontrolled e-scooter parking. In the city centre, they were often used more as a tourist attraction than as a means of transport and caused chaos on pavements and in pedestrian zones,” said Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor of Prague responsible for transport.

Citizens of Prague’s first district had already voted in favour of a ban on shared e-scooters in a referendum. The central districts in particular had long pushed for restrictions, as the vehicles were mainly used by tourists. In Nerudova Street in Prague’s Old Town, e-scooters are already prohibited.
Last year, the Prague police recorded 47 accidents involving e-scooters. By comparison, there were only two bicycle accidents. The figures: seven seriously injured, 30 slightly injured, and one fatality.
