Temelín Nuclear Power Plant Achieves New Production Record in 2025
South Bohemian nuclear plant generates as much electricity since the start of the year as last in 2017
The Temelín Nuclear Power Plant has reached a new production record this year. According to ČEZ, the result is primarily due to technical modernisations and longer operational periods between scheduled shutdowns.
Since the start of the year, the South Bohemian plant has produced enough electricity to theoretically supply all Czech households for around twelve months. After eight years, Temelín has thus surpassed its previous production record. The former peak was in 2017, at 16.48 million megawatt-hours.
According to the energy company ČEZ, the record is the result of long-term preparations. A modernisation of the plant and the switch to extended fuel cycles contributed significantly. This allowed the operational periods between scheduled shutdowns to be extended—while maintaining a high standard of safety. “We have lengthened the operating periods between shutdowns, naturally with maximum focus on safety. This year, everything came together,” explained Temelín Plant Director Jan Kruml.
Annual production depends on the number of shutdowns
In the coming years, ČEZ expects the plant’s electricity generation to depend primarily on whether a year involves one or two planned shutdowns. These are necessary for fuel replacement, safety inspections, and investments in the facility. For the coming year, energy experts therefore already anticipate lower production.
“Breaking records is not our priority,” emphasised Bohdan Zronek, ČEZ Board Member and Head of the Nuclear Energy Division. The goal is rather a long-term safe and as efficient as possible operation. Czech nuclear power plants are a central, emission-free energy pillar on which households and businesses can rely continuously.
No further shutdowns are planned in Temelín until the end of the year. Should operations continue without disruptions, another milestone could be reached: the threshold of 17 million megawatt-hours.
Since the start of the year, Temelín has generated a total of 16.5 terawatt-hours of electricity. Together with the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, the two facilities are among the most important producers of clean energy in the Czech Republic. According to ČEZ, the operation of the nuclear plants avoids around 20 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
