The flu wave continues to affect large parts of the Czech Republic, leading to busy GP surgeries and hospitals. Adults and older people are particularly hard hit at present.
In the second calendar week of the year, the rate of acute respiratory infections (ARI) reached 1,583 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – an increase of 71 per cent compared with the previous week. Although last week’s figures were distorted by the New Year holidays, the current illness rate corresponds to pre-Christmas levels. It is clear: the flu wave is still in full swing.
“Compared with pre-Christmas values, we are currently seeing a significant rise in cases, especially among adults aged 25 to 64 and people over 65,” explained MUDr. Jan Kynčl, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ). “The highest illness rates are currently reported in the Zlín, Plzeň, and Moravian-Silesian regions.”
Since the beginning of the current flu season until 9 January, 151 severe cases requiring intensive care treatment have been reported. Of the 49 deaths, 44 were people over the age of 65.
Chief Hygienist and Director of the SZÚ, MUDr. Barbora Macková, MHA, warned: “The flu should not be underestimated. It can cause severe to life-threatening complications, especially for older or vulnerable people. Use FFP2 masks to protect yourself and your relatives. They provide effective protection, particularly in enclosed spaces with many people – such as public transport, shopping centres, or medical facilities. In addition, remember to wash your hands regularly, follow respiratory etiquette, and avoid having sick children cared for by older adults. The flu wave is expected to continue for several more weeks.”
Flu: Risks and Protective Measures
The flu is a viral respiratory infection that leads to epidemics every winter. In the Czech Republic, hundreds of thousands of people fall ill each year; the infection can result in long-term health consequences or even death. The illness should not be underestimated or simply endured.
Key preventive measures include maintaining a healthy lifestyle – such as regular exercise, avoiding smoking, building resilience, visiting saunas, getting enough sleep and rest, and eating a vitamin-rich diet. Hygienic measures are also essential: wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, ventilate rooms frequently, and use disposable tissues and towels.
During the flu wave, it is particularly advisable to protect yourself and others by wearing FFP2 masks. This significantly reduces the risk of infection – both for yourself and for those around you.
