Entrepreneur insolvencies in the Czech Republic have risen sharply in 2025. The Moravian-Silesian Region was particularly affected, followed by Central Bohemia and the capital, Prague.
Last year, 6,213 self-employed entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic went bankrupt – an increase of 16 % compared with 2024. At the same time, courts received 6,568 insolvency applications, representing a rise of 12 %. This brought the number of corporate insolvencies to the highest level since 2021, according to an analysis by CRIF – Czech Credit Bureau based on data from the portal www.informaceofirmach.cz.
“The courts declared 863 more self-employed entrepreneurs insolvent last year than in 2024. The growth rate was therefore more than twice as high as in the previous year. Between 2021 and 2023, there had been a decline in insolvencies. However, the number of insolvencies remains below the level of 2020,” says Věra Kameníčková, analyst at CRIF – Czech Credit Bureau.
On average, the courts recorded 518 insolvencies per month – 72 more than in 2024. At the same time, an average of 547 insolvency applications were submitted each month, an increase of 59 compared with the previous year. The processing of applications is carried out efficiently, as shown by the small difference between submitted applications and actual insolvencies declared per month.
Moravian-Silesian Region and Construction Sector Most Affected
Regionally, the Moravian-Silesian Region again recorded the highest number of insolvencies in 2025 (829), followed by Central Bohemia (737) and Prague (724). Year-on-year, insolvencies rose in all regions. The largest increase was in the Karlovy Vary District with 37 %, followed by South Bohemia at 27 % and Liberec at 25 %. The smallest increase was in Pilsen at 8 %. Nationwide, there were an average of 61 insolvencies per 10,000 active entrepreneurs, compared with 53 in the previous year.
In 2025, the highest number of insolvencies was recorded in the construction sector (1,502), followed by trade, repair and maintenance of motor vehicles (1,014), and the manufacturing sector (833). The largest percentage increases compared with the previous year were in administrative and support services (+34 %), followed by professional, scientific and technical services (+26 %), and other services such as hairdressers, beauty salons, and repair workshops (+24 %).
