Prague city councillors have approved a comprehensive redesign of Vítězné náměstí, aiming to transform the central square in Dejvice into a vibrant meeting place. The new plan will make the square accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles while serving as a hub for markets and cultural events.
At a meeting held at the end of last week, the city councillors approved an amendment to the land use plan for Vítězné náměstí (Victory Square), also known as Kulatyak. This decision represents a significant step in the redesign of the central square in Dejvice, which is set to become a lively gathering spot. An urban planning competition organized by the Institute for Planning and Development (IPR) selected a concept that will redirect traffic away from the center of the square and create a central space for public activities.
Vítězné náměstí, located on the border between Dejvice and the historic district of Hradčany, and surrounded by interwar and post-war buildings, is currently used more as an unfinished traffic intersection rather than a fully functional square. The redesign aims to transform it into a central location for markets, cultural events, and social gatherings.
The project, designed by Pavel Hnilička Architects and winner of the IPR competition in 2018, includes a thorough revitalization of the square. The new plan envisions improved accessibility for all users—whether on foot, by bike, by car, or by public transport. Besides remodelling the square, additional investments are planned, including the development of the 4th quadrant and a new tram line.
Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor of Prague, highlighted the importance of these investments for enhancing the Dejvice district. Ondřej Boháč, Director of the IPR, noted that the redesign will better utilize the public space and improve the quality of life.
In addition to the square’s remodelling, the unfinished 4th quadrant will also be completed. An international competition has already produced a design for a multifunctional building and a new cultural center. The winning design, by Benthem Crouwel Architects and ov architekti, is currently in the architectural design phase.
