Renovation work on the Barrandov Bridge will conclude this Sunday, nearly two years after it began. Before the reopening, load tests will be conducted over the weekend, necessitating nighttime closures of the northern section of the bridge from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday. These closures will occur from 8:00 PM to 4:35 AM.
As Prague’s busiest transport artery, the Barrandov Bridge has been undergoing staged renovations since May 2022. While the construction caused some traffic disruption, the Technical Road Administration (TSK) and the City of Prague reported that the impact was less severe than expected, thanks to a well-executed communication campaign and motorists’ adjusted driving behavior. Initially, the project was scheduled to extend into next year, but the city consolidated the final phases to complete it this year.
The bridge comprises two structures: the southern bridge, which handles traffic from Smíchov to Braník, and the northern bridge, where current efforts are focused on completing renovations. The southern structure has already been refurbished.
Once this year’s work is finalized, one last phase will remain, involving surface repairs. However, this stage will not require further traffic restrictions.
The renovation project is nearly twice as costly as initially anticipated. Originally estimated at 594.5 million CZK, costs have risen to approximately 1.31 billion CZK due to the poor condition of the original structure, inflation, and the incorporation of modern technologies.
Built between 1978 and 1988, the Barrandov Bridge (Barrandovský most) is a crucial part of Prague’s ring road and had never undergone significant repairs. Every day, it accommodates 140,000 vehicles, making it one of the busiest roads in the Czech Republic.
