    A Year Later: Silent Tribute to the Victims of the Charles University Shooting

    One year ago, on 21 December, a shooting occurred in the centre of Prague, one of the most tragic incidents in the history of the Czech Republic. To mark this somber anniversary, the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University is planning a silent commemoration. On 21 December, there will be a gathering in front of the building on Jan Palach Square in Prague.

    The shooting, in which an attacker targeted the Faculty of Philosophy, claimed 14 lives and injured 25 others, 10 of them seriously. The shooter was eventually killed by the police.

    The act of remembrance will begin with a minute’s silence, according to a spokesperson for the faculty. No speeches are planned, but wreaths will be laid and candles will be lit. In addition, a charity concert entitled Rok poté (One Year After) will be held under the auspices of the faculty.

    Charles University, founded in 1348, is one of the oldest universities in Europe and has a total of around 49,500 students. About 8,000 of these are enrolled at the Faculty of Arts, which offers subjects such as German, Slavic studies, and history.
