Prague Greenlights Construction of Northern Vestibule at Vltavská Metro Station

A new neighbourhood for 25,000 people is to be built between the Nádraží Holešovice and Vltavská metro stations in the coming years

In the coming years, the area between the Nádraží Holešovice and Vltavská metro stations will undergo a comprehensive transformation. The plan is to create a new city district with space for 25,000 people. A decisive step in this development is the construction of a new northern entrance to the Vltavská underground station.

The Prague City Council has approved the plans for the construction of the northern entrance to the Vltavská metro station. The new entrance hall will serve both the residents of the planned neighbourhood on the Bubny-Zátory industrial wasteland in Holešovice and the residents of the area of the Bubeneč housing estate known as ‘Little Berlin’.

‘The importance of the northern vestibule lies primarily in the fact that it will better serve the existing and future residents of the planned development on the current Bubny-Zátory industrial wasteland. The design of the Vestibule will be harmonised with the future development so that it fits into the new urban environment,’ explained Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor of Prague and City Councillor for Urban Development.

‘Between the Nádraží Holešovice and Vltavská metro stations, a new district for 25,000 people will be built in the coming years. The new Praha-Bubny station is already under construction, and the line from the centre of Prague to the airport and on to Kladno is being modernised. The new vestibule will provide residents with convenient and fast access to public transport and will contribute significantly to the development of the entire area,’ added Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor and Transport Commissioner of the City of Prague.

The concept of the northern foyer goes back to the original design of the Vltavská underground station from the 1970s and 1980s. However, construction was postponed at the time due to the declining importance of Bubny station.

Plans are currently being developed in the area in question to justify the completion of the northern Vestibule. These include the Bubny-Zátory study approved in 2020, which envisages the construction of a new urban district for around 25,000 inhabitants. This is to be located between the Vltavská and Nádraží Holešovice underground stations. The study envisages that the district will be served by public transport, with metro line C, the modernised railway line and tram connections forming the backbone of the public transport system.
