Free Disposal of Used Tyres in Prague: Over 600 Tonnes of Tyres Collected in 2024

The amount of tyres dropped off at collection points is continuously increasing

Prague residents’ interest in the free disposal of used tyres at municipal collection points continues to grow steadily. In the past year, over 600 tonnes of tyres were dropped off—a rise of almost 100 tonnes compared to 2023. Compared to 2022, when tyre disposal was still chargeable, the volume has more than doubled.

The demand for free disposal of old car tyres at the municipal collection points remained strong last year. Nearly 100 tonnes more worn-out and unusable tyres were dropped off compared to 2023. Compared to 2022, when this service was still chargeable for Prague residents, the volume of collected used tyres has more than doubled.

“The acceptance of used tyres has proven to be an extremely effective measure. Clearly, this service was something people in the capital needed. I can’t explain this sudden increase to over 600 tonnes of tyres dropped off any other way. Personally, I’m delighted, as discarded tyres in nature have harmful effects on flora and fauna due to the toxic substances they contain,” says Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor of Prague for the Environment and Climate Planning.

The city of Prague collaborates with GREEN Logistics CZ s.r.o. for the collection of used tyres, which operates public tyre return points on behalf of tyre manufacturers across the city.

However, there are legally established restrictions that allow the company to refuse to accept tyres. These include cases of contamination or severe damage that could pose a risk to the health of personnel involved in the collection. Tyres may also be rejected due to capacity reasons or if there are doubts about their origin, such as suspicion that they may not come from end-users, for example, if tyre dealers or car workshops are abusing the free service.
