Two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitová Announces Comeback After Maternity Leave

Kvitová played her last match in Beijing in October 2023

Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová is back: the Czech tennis star has announced her unexpected return on social media. She will make her comeback in the USA at the end of February, much to the delight of her fans.

The 34-year-old, who has won two Wimbledon titles, is set to return on 24 February at a tournament in Austin, Texas. She then plans to compete in the prestigious hard-court events in Indian Wells and Miami in March.

Kvitová last played in Beijing in October 2023. She took a 13-month break from the sport after announcing that she and her coach and husband, Jiří Vaněk, were expecting their first child. At the time, it remained uncertain whether she would return to the tour. She kept her decision open for a long time before surprisingly announcing her comeback, stating that she had missed the game.

“I’m here to share some news with you. After a 15-month break from tennis and the birth of my son, Petr, I’m returning to tennis,” the two-time Wimbledon champion announced.

Throughout her career, Kvitová has claimed 31 singles titles on the WTA Tour and reached a career-high ranking of World No. 2.

In the coming weeks, Kvitová will follow in the footsteps of several successful players who have returned to competition after maternity leave. Recently, Japan’s Naomi Osaka, Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina have all made successful comebacks.
