Beer remains a central component of Czech gastronomy and an important source of revenue in pubs and restaurants. The quality of beer is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage, which is reflected in the steadily growing number of establishments being awarded the Hvězda sládků (Star of the Brewmaster).
Beer continues to play a vital role in local gastronomy. Eight out of ten guests drink it in pubs, and four out of ten in restaurants. It contributes up to 48% of the total turnover of pubs. It is, therefore, essential for operators and bartenders to ‘look after’ the beer. After all, a guest who is satisfied with the quality of the beer returns, on average, twice a month more frequently than one who is not. The fact that the quality of draught beer in local establishments is steadily improving is demonstrated by the Hvězda sládků award, which Plzeňský Prazdroj has been presenting to pubs, restaurants, and bars since 2019 for the proper handling and quality of their draught beer.
In six years, the number of award-winning pubs has nearly tripled. For the year 2025, 892 establishments have already received the award, with the highest increase in the number of pubs and restaurants with excellently treated beer found in municipalities with populations of up to 5,000.

The number of establishments awarded the Hvězda sládků (Star of the Master Brewers) has been rising for some time: 892 establishments received the title for 2025 – nearly 7% more than in the previous year. 78% of establishments were able to maintain their position, while 22% were newly included in the ranking. “We are delighted that more than three-quarters of the pubs we rated have managed to maintain the high quality of their beers over the long term and win the award again. This is proof that their efforts to look after their beer are paying off,” says Vojtěch Homolka, head brewer at Plzeňský Prazdroj.
At the same time, there is a growing number of smaller restaurants and pubs in the Czech Republic that may not have large taps but can still offer beer in excellent condition. “44% of this year’s Hvězda sládků winners draw beer from a tank, while the majority, 56% of the award winners, offer their guests beer on tap,” adds Homolka.
The actual awarding of the Hvězda sládků is preceded by a comprehensive assessment of the business. The overall evaluation consists of technical parameters such as the proper storage of the beer, the regularity and quality of the hygiene of the beer lines, the cleanliness of the tapping system, and the thorough rinsing of the beer glasses. Proper serving throughout the day is also assessed.
The Hvězda sládků award and the consistent care of the beer have long since become a decisive trademark in the catering industry. They not only increase the recognition and reputation of the establishment but also strengthen the trust of the guests.
