Prague Pride 2024 Starts Today: Police Step Up Security Measures

The Prague Pride Festival takes place in Prague from August 5 to 11, 2024. With over 200 events, the festival offers a diverse mix of culture, education, and entertainment. The highlight is the big Pride Parade on Saturday, August 10, which will be accompanied by traffic restrictions and increased security measures.

Today, Monday, August 5, the Prague Pride Festival 2024 kicks off in Prague. With more than 200 events taking place at various locations in the city, the festival offers a week full of culture, education, and entertainment.

The highlight of the festival is the Pride Parade, which starts at 12:00 on Saturday, August 10. Participants will march from the lower part of Wenceslas Square through the city centre to Letna Park. Due to the parade, parts of Prague’s city centre will be closed to traffic for around three hours. The Čechův Most bridge will be particularly affected and will be closed to cars, buses, and trams.

Between 12:15 and 15:00 on Saturday, there will be traffic restrictions for tram lines 17, 27, 41, and 42. These will be routed via the Malostranská stop instead of the Faculty of Law (Právnická fakulta) stop near Čechův Most. Bus line 207 will also temporarily stop at the Na Františku Hospital and Faculty of Law stops and be rerouted to Staroměstská via the Čechův Most and Malostranská stops. Bus line 194 will only run on the Nemocnice pod Petřínem – Staroměstská section; the Staroměstská – Florenc section will be out of service.

The Prague police have increased security measures for the duration of the festival. This comes in response to information from the Slovakian National Criminal Police Office about a planned terrorist attack on the Pride event in Bratislava last month. Therefore, more police officers will be on duty than usual. Officers from the anti-conflict team, patrols with long guns and ballistic protection, police officers from the Extremism and Terrorism Department, and riot police will be present. A police helicopter will also be on hand.

Due to the renovation of the Prague Powder Tower (Prašná brána), the parade route will be slightly changed compared to previous years. Organisers recommend that participants arrive at Wenceslas Square at least one hour in advance and plan their route from Národní třída, náměstí Republiky, or from the Můstek metro station, as the tram line is being built in the upper part of Wenceslas Square, making Jindřišská and Vodičkova Streets more difficult to pass.
