Explore Prague’s New Metro Line D: Open Day at the Pankrác Construction Site

A recently completed tunnel connection makes it possible to open the entire first section of Metro D to the public for the first time without major obstacles

At the open day at the Metro D construction site in Pankrác in mid-May, visitors will get their first glimpse of the completed section of the new line—deep underground and right in the midst of the ongoing construction work.

On Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 May 2025, the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP), together with the City of Prague and the companies involved in the construction, will be organising an open day at the construction site of the first section of the new Metro Line D. Visitors will be able to view a large part of the already excavated and constructed areas for the first time. Entry is free of charge.

Last week, two more important tunnel connections were completed at the construction site: the first, from the left section of Pankrác D station towards the future tunnel to Olbrachtova station, and the second between the escalator tunnel to the northern entrance and the platform of Olbrachtova station. Only the first breakthrough point will make it possible to open the entire first section of Metro D to the public for the first time without major height differences and structural obstacles.

‘This year, we are celebrating 150 years of public transport in Prague. Metro D and the associated fully automated trains are a strategic project for the city. The open day is part of the anniversary programme—a symbolic gift to the people of Prague. We are offering two days and two sightseeing routes to give as many people as possible access to this unique construction site.’

1.6 Kilometres on Foot at a Depth of Around 30 Metres – From Olbrachtova to Pankrác

The underground route begins at the surface level at the southern entrance to Olbrachtova station. From there, visitors descend via a temporary staircase—around ten floors with approximately 150 steps—into the left-hand tunnel of Olbrachtova station, at a depth of around 30 metres. The tour continues through the public part of the tunnel, on through the technical area, past connecting sections to the right-hand tunnel, and under a temporary shaft in the direction of Pankrác station.

During the tour, visitors can also see the formwork vehicle for tunnelling, as well as technical equipment such as ventilation systems and assembly rooms.

For safety and capacity reasons, prior registration on the website dpp.cz/dodmetrod (CZ) is required. A QR code must be shown at the entrance.

A Physically Demanding Route – Not Suitable for Everyone

The underground route consists partly of concrete surfaces and partly of muddy ground. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility, claustrophobia, or vertigo. Access is also only permitted for children who are at least 140 cm tall. The route requires a certain level of physical fitness, as visitors must climb two flights of stairs. The temperature is 10-12°C, and it is damp and slippery. Sturdy, closed hiking boots with non-slip soles, long trousers, and clothing suitable for the weather are recommended. The tour lasts around 60 to 90 minutes but should not exceed two hours for capacity reasons.

How to Get to the Construction Site – Preferably by Public Transport

To reach the site, we recommend taking Metro Line C to Budějovická station and alighting at the Poliklinika Budějovická bus stop. From there, a special bus line, ‘DOD Metro D’, runs every 8 minutes from 07:29 to 17:55. Alternatively, you can take lines 121, 124, 134, and 170, getting off at the Ryšánka stop. For the return journey after the tour, you can take Tram Line 19 to Pražského povstání or Bus 134 from the temporary stop at the Gemini building to Budějovická Metro station.

Further information about the event can be found on the Prague Public Transport website at dpp.cz/dodmetrod (CZ).
