Czech Republic to Start Construction of High-Speed Railway Line Next Year

The long-awaited construction of a high-speed railway line in the Czech Republic is set to begin next year, starting with the first section between Brno and Přerov. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era in Czech rail transport. Construction on the section between Brno and Břeclav is planned for 2026, while the Moravská brána section, which will connect Přerov with Ostrava, is scheduled to begin no later than 2028.

Discussions around the construction of high-speed railway lines (Vysokorychlostní tratě | VRT) in the Czech Republic have been ongoing since the 1990s, but only in recent years have preparations taken concrete shape. The new railway line will enable trains to travel at speeds of up to 320 km/h, significantly reducing journey times.

Transport Minister Martin Kupka told ČT24 news channel that he estimates the total cost of building the high-speed railway to be around eight hundred billion crowns. If everything goes according to plan, construction on the Prague section of the high-speed infrastructure is expected to begin in 2030.

In Prague, the Railway Administration (SŽ) is planning to build a new dispatching centre to manage and control rail traffic on the high-speed lines. The new building will be constructed near the existing dispatching centre in Prague Balabenka, with construction scheduled to begin in 2027.

These developments promise to significantly modernize and improve the Czech rail network, not only shortening travel times but also increasing the capacity and efficiency of both national and international rail transport.
